SPICES

Spices come from dried aromatic plants or trees and may be the bark, root, seeds, fruit, buds or the berry of these plants/trees.

As well as providing delicious and exotic flavourings in savoury and sweet dishes, spices may be used in preserving food, assisting digestion, and as medications.

Whole spices can be kept for three to four years and ground spices for one year to 18 months. For this reason, Mrs Rogers spices come as whole spices, packed in convenient grinders - providing fresh vibrant taste every time you cook.

To spice your dishes with beautifully rounded, well balanced, flavours first fry your freshly ground spices in a little hot oil for 1-2 minutes before adding the other ingredients. This cooks the spices and helps ensure their special flavours are absorbed by the oil which, in turn, permeates the whole dish.

Description: Cinnamon is the dried bark of various laurel trees in the cinnamomun family.

Health Benefits: Though cinnamon is one of the most common kitchen spices, cinnamon's uses out of the kitchen are just as spectacular.

Cinnamon is an antiseptic and has been used medicinally for thousands of years to soothe stomach irritation, fight tooth decay and gum disease, cure urinary tract infections, and some evidence suggests, prevent stomach ulcers.

Some studies have also shown that cinnamon helps people with adult-onset (Type II) diabetes metabolise sugar better (tripling insulin efficiency!). Taking ½ to ¾ teaspoon of ground cinnamon with each meal may help control blood sugar levels.
